Hello, and welcome to the 21st Century Journalism classroom. This semester course gives students the opportunity to dabble in four journalistic areas taught at Silver Lake High School: news writing, photography, layout and design, and broadcasting.
Students apply their knowledge through many hands-on projects, including designing a front page of a newspaper in Adobe inDesign, producing a two-minute news package in Adobe Premiere, and creating photo portfolios highlighting different camera techniques. Students’ knowledge is assessed through a few quizzes and tests, with most of the grading coming from hands-on projects and daily production grades.
If a student earns at least a "B" in this semester course and gains permission from the instructor, he or she may then enroll in journalism production classes, including Digital Media Design and Production, Audio/Video Fundamentals, Video Production, and Project Management. In these production courses, students maintain the district web site, produce the printed high school newspaper, create the high school yearbook, update social media, and direct multiple video projects for the web site and community viewing.
